Final Fantasy I - Entering the Chaos

First Level of Chaos

As we arrive in the past, we see the structure of the Shrine is a lot more intact. Where the walls were run down in the present day, they stand firm in the past, seemingly with a primary goal of making us walk further...

We have a choice to head down in the south west, or up in the south east. Using similar logic to the Sunken Shrine, I feel like down will be the best bet, as I assume our foe is at the top. That being said that logic was wrong in the Sunken Shrine... I don't know, the vibe's still right, I guess.

There's crossover in the enemies here from the Flying Fortress, so I'm comfortable we were okay to head straight here from the last area in that sense at least.

On that note, it's clearly me being stubborn or lazy, I'm finding myself slowly hacking away at packs of Black Flans too, when if my FF knowledge has taught me anything, flans are weak to magic. There was even a challenge to avoid the tutorial for it in FFX, I believe - I want to say it was dozens of hours to grind out the Sphere Levels to one-shot it. Time I wish I had right there...

Anyway, heading downstairs to B1, we're presented with a door and a large room with what looks like a plinth at the end, or at the very least somewhere-to-put-something. Other than that it's a dead end, so we head back up and try the other way. Puzzles are fun!

Heading up two sets of stairs, we make our way to 2F, which looks like we have to climb again. This feels like it really is getting complicated quickly.

3F feels like it's the first floor that's open, but the only place to go is into a central room. On this floor we're fighting our old foes Dark Wizards, and it's nice for them to be spamming Thundaga at us and it not be an immediate near-death experience.

We enter the central room and there's a hooded monster in the doorway to greet us. It turns out this is a Death Eye, which feels like a call back to the Evil Eye some point earlier which was a pushover. I suspect that may have been a misdirect for this one in that case.

I was wrong.

A hit each from Rukus and Kaili and it's down. Only 1 gil and 1 EXP though, so on that basis, probably one of the hardest ways to make a gil in the game.
